Young Fathers Owned 2014

December 18, 2014
Young Fathers have had an amazing year, but you don't have to take our word for it. Following the success of their critically acclaimed debut album, DEAD, the trio went on to perform on Jimmy Kimmel Live, win Scotland's prestigious SAY award, and beat out a short list of great talents for the esteemed Mercury Prize.
Now that the year's coming to a close, our boys are popping up all over the web as taste-makers and content aggregators make the rounds for their year-end reviews. The List's "Hot 100" cultural contributors featured Young Fathers' DEAD as its highest ranked album at #4, while Sam Moore of Drowned in Sound wrote: "If you’re looking for a thoroughly twenty-first-century record that’ll challenge your preconceptions and bombard the senses, then DEAD is something that’s definitely worth your while," and placed it at #9 in their list of the 20 best debut albums 2014 had to offer.
Young Fathers didn't just inspire sonically, but visually as well. DEAD's album artwork was among Complex Magazine's list of The 30 Best Album Covers of 2014 and was nominated for the 2014 Best Art Vinyl Award. Ravedeaf provided insight into the inspiration for DEAD's album cover in this interview, where the band's 'G' Hastings succinctly notes, "Eye always beats ear".
Fittingly, the folks at Impose Magazine had the foresight to lend the group a couple of disposable cameras to document their first North American tour this Spring. Check out these intimate snapshots on road trips, shows, and the creative process over at Impose.
In the midst of their current UK tour, Young Fathers had the chance to decompress with Nadia Khomami in a feature for The Observer's faces of 2014, where Alloysious Massaquoi related, "We want our music to be worldwide. We believe that this kind of music should be recognized and seen," and if their progress this year is any indication of what's to come, we're sure they'll realize that dream soon enough.
Don't miss your chance to see Young Fathers on one of their EU/US tour dates, all of which can be found on their website.
